A spice like no other
At Gadadessa we have a Vanilla plantation as well. After saffron, Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world, and greatly coveted for its flavor in everything from ice cream to vodka.
Spread out over an acre of land, vanilla vines are grown in a shady forested area close to the Octagon House. The naturally fertile forest soil and high moisture content are ideal for growing this valuable spice. Vanilla cultivation needs lot of labour, intensive care –and time to cure.
Vanilla cultivation is not common in Sri Lanka, so again you have a somewhat unique opportunity to experience vanilla cultivation and vanilla processing at Gadadessa.
